Communication Disorders
"The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood"-Ralph Nichols
A communication disorder is when people have difficulty conveying information or thoughts to other people. While many people are born with their disorder, others can acquire one later in life
There are different types of communication disorders...
*Problems with Articulation-struggles with the actual speech and sounds involved with communication
*Phonological Difficulties-struggles to produce the correct sounds and speech that are appropriate for their age.
*Fluency Issues-struggles with the flow of their speech, frequently pausing.
*Voice Disorders-problems with the vocal aspects of speech such as pitch or loudness.

The following website has links to specific communication disorders, please read about at least one and think about how students dealing with that disorder may feel in school. (socially/academically?)

Symptoms of communication disorders may include:
*Not being able to speak at all
*Limited vocabulary for their age
*Difficulty understanding directions
*Struggles with learning new vocabulary
*Cannot name common objects
*Problems understanding and formulating words
*Unable to talk about abstract ideas
*Difficulty with comprehension
There are many communication disorders and the symptoms can vary but it is important that students are identified early. These types of disorders can lead to other problems, such as social or academic problems. For example, a student who has a stuttering problem may not want to participate in class because they are embarrassed. There is strong correlation between communication and academic success, so it is important as teachers that we do everything we can to ensure that our students can communicate. (Alejandro Brice)
